Island

Roaring 40’s

Choral and instrumental activities are thoroughly enjoyed by many islanders who through music, find happiness. It’s a chance to step away from running a business in town, living off the farmland or earning a crust at sea.

It’s absolutely amazing what music can do!

A few years back a local group of harmonizers recorded this gorgeous sea-shanty that was written in the 1970’s by the late Elvie Bowman—Flinders Island’s most eminent homegrown poet.

Where the Roaring Forties Blow

There’s an island in the Furneaux
Set out in the Bass Strait blue
Where the westerlies stir up the ocean’s foam.
If you ask the folk who live there
What gives them happiness,
They’ll smile and tell you
Flinders is their home….

That’s Flinders Island, Flinders Island,
Our Island where the Roaring Forties blow.

All those green and pleasant pastures,
Where lambs play in the sun
And cattle graze or laze to their content.
Rocky Bays and long white beaches,
Where seagulls soar and cry
Over waters blue as nature ever meant.

That’s Flinders Island, Flinders Island,
Our Island where the Roaring Forties blow.

High and wide the granite mountains
Reach to a clear blue sky,
Stark silent sentinels of years gone by.
Any traveler coming homeward by air or on the sea,
Will seek those craggy peaks with shining eye….

That’s Flinders Island, Flinders Island,
Our Island where the Roaring Forties blow.

It’s catchy!

Food for Thought :: True isolation is not about living on islands, rather, more about cities, lack of true community, loss of connection to nature, to each other, to selves. Splendid are we in our isolation, for is it not that very state which connects us? {1}
