Flinders is a gem floating amongst a sea of treasures………

My first visit to Flinders Island was in May of 94, and is acid-etched into my memory. I was part of a teaching team that took California University students throughout NZ and NE Australia every two years for the entire semester. When these duties finished I would wander Australia, always making a point to spend 10 days or so in Tasmania. On that May day a girl was sitting near me on the twin engine from Launceston to Flinders. “What do you know about Flinders?” queried I. “I grew up there.” said she. Thus did I begin a friendship with Fiona and her parents Robert, the island M.D., and Ann, who taught at the island school. The plane landed in a light rain, Robert and Ann stood holding grey bundles, which turned out to be Razortooth and Queen Victoria, orphaned wombats that they were caring for. That evening was spent on their floor with a map of Flinders, glasses of white wine, and Razortooth and QV bashing about. No one forgets an evening like that.
I met Robert and Ann again in 96 – learned that Fiona was recovering from a lightning strike – but then lost touch although I tried to make contact through various modes to no avail. Through a sad turn of events I lost all of my address/contact files some years back and have slowly been trying to resurrect connections. If any reader has contact with Robert, Ann and Fiona, do give them my greetings and email.
    Cheers, Ray in California []
